SWS Market Update - US stocks climb Friday after a strong week of data


U.S. stocks finished higher on Friday with both the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 closing with gains for their fourth week in a row. Investors were encouraged this week after reports on Wednesday noted that inflation rates dropped from 9.1% June to 8.5% in July.


The S&P 500 went up 1.73% to close at 4280.15 on Friday and was up over 3.0% for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.27% to close at 33761.05 and was up 2.9% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite ticked up 2.09% on Friday to close at 13047.19 and was up over 3.0% for the week.


Economic Reports

Import price index dropped in July from 0.3% to -1.4%.


UMich consumer sentiment index (preliminary) increased from 51.5 to 55.1 in August.


UMich 5-year inflation expectations (preliminary) reported a slight increase in August from 2.9% to 3.0%.


Markets

The SP 500 went up by 1.73% to close at 4280.15. The index is up 3.26% over five days, up 10.79% over one month, up 6.37% over three months and down 4.20% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 22.75 compared to 31.31 one year ago and estimated future P/E 18.69. Dividend yield is currently 1.54 compared with 1.32 one year ago.

Leading stocks were BR up 7.95%, ON up 7.23%, ALB up 5.97%, PENN up 5.90% and GNRC up 5.32%.

Trailing stocks were ILMN down 8.40%, PKI down 1.89%, OGN down 1.34%, JNJ down 1.10% and OKE down 0.94%.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average went up 1.27% to close at 33761.05. The DOW is up 2.92% over five days, up 7.90% over one month, up 4.86% over three months and down 4.94% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 19.90 compared with 24.21 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 17.90. The current dividend yield is 2.11% compared with 1.80 one year ago.

Leading stocks were DIS up 3.30%, MRK up 2.35%, AAPL up 2.14%, UNH up 2.03% and WMT up 1.85%.

Trailing stocks were JNJ down 1.10%, AMGN up 0.02%, V up 0.12%, CVX down 0.14% and GS up 0.61%.


The NASDAQ composite went up 2.09% and closed at 13047.19. NASDAQ is up 3.08% over five days, up 13.93% over one month, up 10.52% over 3 months and down 11.98% over one year.

Leading stocks were EMBK up 84.80%, VEEE up 77.50%, ANTX up 64.66%, UBX up 54.10% and CNFR up 41.94%.

Trailing stocks were PSHG down 44.88%, PLXP down 36.68%, IMAC down 33.36%, APTX down 32.33%, and USIO down 31.25%.


The MidCap SP400 went up by 1.53% to close at 2615.01. The SP400 is up 4.42% for the past 5 days, up 13.51% for the past month, up 7.53% for the past 3 months and down 4.26% over the past year.


The SmallCap SP600 went up by 1.85% to close at 1287.80. The SP600 is up 3.91% for the past 5 days, up 13.25% for the past month, up 8.28% for the past 3 months and down 4.60% over the past year.
