SWS Market Update: U.S. stocks climbed on Thursday after earnings reports


After the release of earnings reports from major companies that were better-than-expected, U.S. stocks closed with gains on Thursday. The S&P 500 went up by 0.99% to close at 3998.95. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.51% to close at 32036.90 and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.36% to close at 12059.61.


Economic Reports

Initial jobless claims for the week ending July 16 increased from 244,000 to 251,000.


Continuing jobless claims for the week ending July 9 climbed from 1.33 million to 1.38 million.


Fed manufacturing index fell in July from -3.3 to -12.3, much lower than economists had predicted it to be at 1.6.


Leading economic indicators had a slight drop in June from -0.6% to -0.8%.


Markets

The SP 500 went up by 0.99% to close at 3998.95. The index is up 5.50% over five days, up 5.35% over one month, down 8.98% over three months and down 8.44% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 20.57 compared to 36.60 one year ago and estimated future P/E 16.43. Dividend yield is currently 1.68 compared with 1.35 one year ago.

Leading stocks were TSLA up 9.78%, NUE up 9.27%, DHR up 9.20%, BIO up 7.57% and BBWI up 6.91%.

Trailing stocks were CCL down 11.18%, UAL down 10.17%, POOL down 10.13%, DFS down 8.83% and RCL down 8.37%.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average went up 0.51% to close at 32036.90. The DOW is up 4.59% over five days, up 4.43% over one month, down 7.92% over three months and down 8.00% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 18.79 compared with 26.15 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 16.30. The current dividend yield is 2.20% compared with 1.83 one year ago.

Leading stocks were BA up 1.94%, GS up 1.63%, CRM up 1.62%, AAPL up 1.51% and WMT up 1.45%.

Trailing stocks were VZ down 2.89%, DOW down 2.15%, IBM down 1.63%, WBA down 1.18% and CVX down 0.78%.


The NASDAQ composite went up 1.36% and closed at 12059.61. NASDAQ is up 7.19% over five days, up 7.37% over one month, down 8.46% over 3 months and down 17.88% over one year.

Leading stocks were ADXN up 110.40%, ONEM up 69.45%, TRHC up 56.54%, TUEM up 42.83% and TBLT up 36.52%.

Trailing stocks were LMDX down 36.97%, NLSP down 31.08%, FFIE down 26.51%, PRPH down 24.71%, and Biote Corp down 23.08%.
