SWS Market Update - May 6, 2022


Overview

U.S. stocks continued a losing streak by closing lower on Friday with the S&P 500 experiencing its worst weekly losing streak in almost eleven years. The benchmark index fell 0.6% on Friday to 4123.34 and was down 0.2% for the week, its fifth week of losses. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.40% to close at 12144.66 and lost 1.5% for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid down 0.30% to close at 32899.37 on Friday and was down 0.2% for the week.


Economic Reports

Nonfarm payrolls remained at 428,000 in April.


Unemployment rate stayed flat at 3.6% for the month of April.


Average hourly earnings dropped from 0.5% in March to 0.3% in April.


Labor force participation rate, 25-54 saw a slight decrease from 82.5% to 82.4%.


Consumer credit was at $52 billion in March, compared with $38 billion the month before.


Markets

The SP 500 went down by 0.57% to close at 4123.34. The index is down 0.21% over five days, down 8.13% over one month, down 8.38% over three months and down 2.58% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 22.58 compared to 37.89 one year ago and estimated future P/E 18.25. Dividend yield is currently 1.49 compared with 1.37 one year ago.

Leading stocks were NRG up 9.79%, EOG up 7.13%, HES up 7.01%, APA up 6.80% and MCK up 5.95%.

Trailing stocks were UA down 25.88%, UAA down 23.79%, DISH down 19.14%, ILMN down 14.63% and NWS down 13.68%.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down 0.30% to close at 32899.37. The DOW is down 0.24% over five days, down 5.25% over one month, down 6.24% over three months and down 5.40% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 18.70 compared with 30.01 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 17.39. The current dividend yield is 2.17% compared with 1.73 one year ago.

Leading stocks were CVX up 2.66%, IBM up 1.29%, PG up 1.00%, UNH up 0.99% and AMGN up 0.92%.

Trailing stocks were NKE down 3.49%, AXP down 2.26%, WMT down 2.08%, DIS down 2.06% and HD down 1.60%.


The NASDAQ composite went down 1.40% and closed at 12144.66. NASDAQ is down 1.54% over five days, down 11.42% over one month, down 13.86% over 3 months and down 11.69% over one year.

Leading stocks were SIDU up 51.78%, NVCT up 30.19%, BBIG up 28.02%, TRHC up 27.33% and FNKO up 26.91%.

Trailing stocks were DBGI down 54.73%, JYNT down 37.89%, CLVS down 32.56%, ENDP down 29.70%, and METX down 28.18%.


The MidCap SP400 went down by 1.34% to close at 2480.95. The SP400 is down 0.77% for the past 5 days, down 5.20% for the past month, down 5.42% for the past 3 months and down 10.44% over the past year.
