SWS Market Update - May 19, 2022


U.S. stocks finished lower on Thursday as investors continue to worry about the well-being of the economy.

The S&P 500 fell 0.58% to close at 3900.79 and is getting close to being in a bear market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.75% to close at 31253.13 and the Nasdaq Composite went down 0.26% to close at 11388.50.


Economic Reports

Initial jobless claims for the week ending May 14 increased from 197,000 to 218,000, higher than expected at 200,000.


Continuing jobless claims for the week ending May 7 decreased from 1.34 million to 1.32 million.


Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index was 2.6 for May, in comparison to 17.6 the month before.


Existing home sales (SAAR) dropped in April from 5.75 million to 5.61 million.


Leading economic indicators were -0.3% in April, compared with 0.1% previously.


Markets

The SP 500 went down by 0.58% to close at 3900.79. The index is down 0.75% over five days, down 11.22% over one month, down 10.95% over three months and down 6.21% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 20.48 compared to 37.04 one year ago and estimated future P/E 17.45. Dividend yield is currently 1.53 compared with 1.38 one year ago.

Leading stocks were SNPS up 10.25%, MKTX up 7.10%, GNRC up 6.62%, ENPH up 6.00% and LYV up 5.98%.

Trailing stocks were UA down 15.76%, CSCO down 13.73%, UAA down 11.87%, BBBY down 6.78% and PM down 5.35%.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down 0.75% to close at 31253.13. The DOW is down 1.50% over five days, down 10.17% over one month, down 8.91% over three months and down 8.31% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 17.8 compared with 29.15 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 16.93. The current dividend yield is 2.29% compared with 1.76 one year ago.

The NASDAQ composite went down 0.26% and closed at 11388.50. NASDAQ is up 0.15% over five days, down 13.56% over one month, down 16.97% over 3 months and down 15.86% over one year.

Leading stocks were NURO up 76.28%, VVPR up 47.64%, NMTC up 29.33%, ACRX up 27.63% and CPOP up 27.59%.

Trailing stocks were MKD down 27.50%, PRE down 26.41%, ENJY down 21.36%, BNSO down 19.46%, and CIH down 18.99%.


The MidCap SP400 went down by 0.18% to close at 2391.34. The SP400 is up 0.91% for the past 5 days, down 9.89% for the past month, down 9.59% for the past 3 months and down 10.89% over the past year.

Leading stocks were GME up 8.43%, BJ up 7.43% and SPWR up 6.17%.
