SWS Market Update - March 11, 2022


Stocks closed lower on Friday after another volatile week in the markets. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.18% to end the week at 12843.81 and is down 18% since the beginning of the year. The S&P 500 dropped 1.30% to close at 4204.31 and is down 3.5% for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had its fifth consecutive week of losses, going down 0.69% to close at 32944.19 on Friday and down 2% for the week.


Economic Reports

UMich consumer sentiment index (preliminary) came in at 59.7 for March, down from 62.8 previously.


Five-year inflation expectations (preliminary) remained at 3.0% in March.


Markets

The SP 500 is down by 1.30% to close at 4204.31. The index is down 2.88% over five days, down 4.85% over one month, down 10.77% over three months and up 6.62% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 23.68 compared to 44.63 one year ago and estimated future P/E 18.85. Dividend yield is currently 1.44 compared with 1.49 one year ago.

Leading stocks were EPAM up 6.03%, LYB up 3.70%, DE up 3.00%, BKR up 2.45% and VLO up 2.33%.

Trailing stocks were ETSY down 11.50%, GNRC down 7.11%, ALGN down 6.84%, MTCH down 6.81% and SBNY down 6.49%.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down 0.69% to close at 32944.19. The DOW is down 1.99% over five days, down 5.16% over one month, down 8.41% over three months and up 0.51% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 18.29 compared with 33.35 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 17.43. The current dividend yield is 2.14% compared with 1.81 one year ago.

Leading stocks were MCD up 2.19%, CAT up 1.44%, TRV up 1.07%, AMGN up 0.84% and MRK up 0.48%.

Trailing stocks were NKE down 2.70%, AAPL down 2.39%, JPM down 2.25%, MMM down 2.06% and MSFT up 1.93%.


The NASDAQ composite went down 2.18% and closed at 12843.81. NASDAQ is down 3.53% over five days, down 6.87% over one month, down 17.83% over 3 months and down 3.57% over one year.

Leading stocks were WULF up 49.29%, GFAI up 45.04%, CLSD up 42.59%, LBPS up 37.63% and SLDB up 37.38%.

Trailing stocks were ORPH down 45.75%, ZCMD down 38.24%, XELA down 32.68%, LVOX down 30.39%, and IMPP down 27.66%.


The MidCap SP400 went down by 0.99% to close at 2570.76. The SP400 is down 1.71% for the past 5 days, down 2.90% for the past month, down 7.52% for the past 3 months and down 2.86% over the past year.

Leading stocks were DY up 6.33%, MTZ up 4.17% and CAR up 3.33%.

Trailing stocks were POST down 33.47%, APPS down 8.84% and STAA down 8.76%
