SWS Market Update - March 4, 2022


The major U.S. stock indexes closed lower after another choppy week. The Dow Jones Industrial average fell for the fourth week in a row, dropping 0.53% to close at 33794.66. The S&P 500 ticked down 0.79% to close at 4328.87 and the Nasdaq Composite went down 1.66% to close at 13313.44.



Economic Reports

Nonfarm payrolls went up from 481,000 to 678,000 in February, much higher than economists had predicted at 440,000.


Unemployment rate dropped from 4.0% to 3.8% in February.


Average hourly earnings were 0.0% in February.


Labor Force participation, prime working age was at 82.2% in February.


Markets

The SP 500 is down by 0.79% to close at 4328.87. The index is down 1.27% over five days, down 3.81% over one month, down 4.62% over three months and up 12.67% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 24.21 compared to 45.02 one year ago and estimated future P/E 19.25. Dividend yield is currently 1.42 compared with 1.49 one year ago.

Leading stocks were OXY up 17.59%, MOS up 7.49%, KR up 6.97%, BKR up 6.44% and CSX up 6.06%.

Trailing stocks were PVH down 11.57%, APTV down 9.41%, UAL down 9.07%, TPR down 8.42% and MU down 8.15%.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down 0.53% to close at 33794.66. The DOW is down 1.30% over five days, up 4.20% over one month, down 2.79% over three months and up 6.73% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 18.67 compared with 32.05 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 17.63. The current dividend yield is 2.08% compared with 1.88 one year ago.

Leading stocks were BCEL up 211.38%, IMPP up 53.64%, VEON up 52.09%, SEED up 35.21% and EJH up 34.90%.

Trailing stocks were CISO down 25.74%, CMBM down 24.66%, VIEW down 23.78%, DBVT down 23.43%, and ICLK down 23.14%.


The MidCap SP400 went down by 1.58% to close at 2615.47. The SP400 is down 1.73% for the past 5 days, down 0.29% for the past month, down 3.21% for the past 3 months and up 4.08% over the past year.

Leading stocks were AA up 9.37%, NOV up 7.51% and KBR up 7.37%.
