SWS Daily Market Update - October 21, 2021


The S&P 500 closed on Thursday at a record high of 4549.78, up 0.3% continuing a week of gains for the index. The Nasdaq Composite index gained as well, advancing 0.6% to close at 15215.70. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.02% to close at 35603.08.


Initial jobless claims came in at the lowest level since the start of the pandemic at 290,000 compared with an anticipated 300,000 and down from 296,000 the previous week.


Continuing jobless claims from the week ending October 9 were at 2.48 million compared with 2.60 million previously.


Existing home sales increased from 5.88 million in August to 6.29 million in September which is higher than was estimated (6.10 million).


The Leading economic indicators dropped in September to 0.2% from 0.8% in August. Economists had projected 0.4% for September.


Markets

The SP 500 is up by 0.30% to close at 4549.78. The index is up 2.51% over five days, up 2.27% over one month, up 4.17% over three months and up 31.74% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 30.49 compared to 38.21 one year ago and estimated future P/E 21.87. Dividend yield is currently 1.32 compared with 1.72 one year ago.

Leading stocks were MTCH up 10.29%, POOL up 7.65%, HPQ up 6.96%, TTWO up 4.93% and NFLX up 4.48%.

Trailing stocks were IBM down 9.52%, SNA down 6.79%, DFS down 6.22%, KMI down 5.95% and PYPL down 5.86%.


The Dow Jones industrial Average is down by 0.02% to close at 35603.08. The DOW is up 1.98% over five days, up 2.41% over one month, up 2.24% over three months and up 25.52% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 23.43 compared with 26.49 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 19.07. The current dividend yield is 1.80% compared with 2.14 one year ago.
