SWS Daily Market Update - February 10, 2022


Reports on Thursday showed that inflation climbed to an annual rate of 7.5% in January, the highest level it has been in four decades and US stocks dropped as a result. Additionally, the 10-year US treasury note surpassed 2% for the first time since 2019. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.47% to 35241.59. The S&P 500 dropped 1.81% to 4504.08 and the Nasdaq Composite declined by 2.10% to 14185.64. All 11 sectors of the S&P 500 fell on Thursday as well.

Economic Reports

Initial jobless claims for the week ending Feb. 5 dropped from 239,000 to 223,000. Continuing jobless claims for the week ending Jan. 29 remained at 1.62 million.


Core CPI for January (month-to-month) increased in January to 0.6%.


Consumer Price Index (year-to-year) saw an increase from 7.0% to 7.5% in January. That is the highest annual rate of inflation in four decades.


Core CPI (year-to-year) for January went up from 5.5% to 6.0%.


Markets

The SP 500 is down by 1.81% to close at 4504.08. The index is up 0.59% over five days, down 3.33% over one month, down 3.12% over three months and up 15.01% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 25.37 compared to 43.92 one year ago and estimated future P/E 20.05. Dividend yield is currently 1.38 compared with 1.50 one year ago.

Leading stocks were DIS up 3.35%, MU up 3.29%, K up 3.11%, IFF up 2.87% and O’Reilly Automotive up 2.85%.

Trailing stocks were LUMN down 15.52%, IPG down 8.77%, ZBRA down 7.78%, MSI down 6.98% and PHM down 5.64%.


The Dow Jones industrial Average went down 1.47% to close at 35241.59. The DOW is up 0.37% over five days, down 2.41% over one month, down 1.89% over three months and up 12.12% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 19.83 compared with 31.46 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 18.68. The current dividend yield is 1.93% compared with 1.92 one year ago.

Leading stocks were DIS up 3.35%, MU up 3.29%, K up 3.11%, IFF up 2.87% and O’Reilly Automotive up 2.85%.

Trailing stocks were AMGN down 3.53%, MSFT down 2.84%, HD down 2.55%, CSCO down 2.52% and HON down 2.48%.


The NASDAQ composite is down 2.10% and closed at 14185.64. NASDAQ is up 2.21% over five days, down 4.20% over one month, down 9.67% over 3 months and up 1.14% over one year.

Leading stocks were AREB up 42.79%, DRMA up 32.71%, BRC Inc up 30.22%, HUSN up 25.00% and VCNX down 24.36%.

Trailing stocks were TWOU down 47.86%, QMCO down 38.99%, ASPU down 38.00%, ADGI down 31.85%, and EMKR down 30.90%.


The MidCap SP400 went down by 1.46% to close at 2681.78. The SP400 is up 2.40% for the past 5 days, down 3.94% for the past month, down 7.31% for the past 3 months and up 5.78% over the past year.

Leading stocks were MAT up 7.65%, NVST up 7.04% and SMG up 4.75%.

Trailing stocks were TREX down 7.75%, CHX down 7.11% and FAF down 6.77%

There were 87 new 52 week highs and 349 new 52 week lows on NYSE with 60 new highs and 270 new lows on NASDAQ.


The 2 year Treasury note yield is 1.587% and 10 year is 2.033%. The 10-year yield is up 12.0% over five days, up 24.1% over one month, up 46.7% three months ago, and up 82.3% one year ago.
