SWS Daily Market Update - October 8, 2021


Stocks ended a volatile week by dropping on Friday but ending the week up with SPX rising 0.8%, DOW also rising 0.8% and Nasdaq climbing by 0.1%. It appears that once again investors are buying on the dip, with the SPX having dropped 5% from its record highs. The 10 year T bill rose to its highest since June at 1.604%. The COBE volatility index dropped – 1.41% to 21.00.

The NYSE had 1468 advances, 1878 declines with 125 new 52 week highs and 52 new 52 week lows. On Nasdaq there were 1741 advances, 2667 declines, 101 new highs and 139 new lows. The leading sector was Energy up 3.12% and trailing was Real Estate down – 1.12%.

The Labor department reported that only 235,000 jobs were added September, well below the consensus estimate of around 500,000 and the values of 1.1 million in July and 962,000 in June.

The unemployment rate fell again to a pandemic low of 5.2 % in August from 5.4% in July. There were still 5.3 million fewer jobs in August 2021 than in February 2020 before the pandemic.

No major economic news is to be released on October 11. ​


The SP 500 is down by 0.19% to close at 4391.34. The index is up 0.79% over five days, down 1.51% over one month, up 0.50% over three months and up 26.29% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 30.04 compared to 36.94 one year ago and estimated future P/E 21.47. Dividend yield is currently 1.38 compared with 1.81 one year ago.

Leading stocks were APA up 6.84%, HES up 6.63%, EOG up 5.53%, COP up 4.77% and MRO up 4.50%.

Trailing stocks were CTXS down 5.65%, HBI down 4.98%, CHTR down 4.83%, CMCSA down 4.7% and CARR down 3.47%.


The Dow Jones industrial Average is down by 0.03% to close at 34746.25. The DOW is up 1.22% over five days, up 0.40% over one month, down 0.36% over three months and up 21.55% over one year.

The trailing P/E is 23.60 compared with 28.05 year ago and an estimated future P/E of 18.88. The current dividend yield is 1.86% compared with 2.17 one year ago.

Leading stocks were CVX up 2.24%, IBM up 0.99%, UNH up 0.93%, GS up 0.56% and AXP up 0.49%.

Trailing stocks were MRK down 1.60%, VZ down 1.22%, WBA down 0.98%, HD down 0.93%, and CRM up 0.76%.


The NASDAQ composite is down by 0.51% and closed at 14579.54. NASDAQ is up 0.09% over five days, down 3.55% over one month, down 0.83% over 3 months and up 25.90% over one year.

Leading stocks were CCXI up 95.97%, DATS up 45.77%, VYGVF up 44.53%, HUDI up 37.14% and RSLS up 26.21%.

Trailing stocks were ALLO down 46.14%, AGRX down 28.41%, NKTX down 27.57%, CLLS down 24.21%, and CRBU down 15.22%.


The MidCap SP400 is down by 0.56% to close at 2690.22. The SP400 is up 0.25% for the past 5 days, up 0.14% for the past month, down 0.60% for the past 3 months and up 34.76% over the past year.

Leading stocks were CAR up 9.29%, MUR up 6.11% and KEX up 4.50%.

Trailing stocks were CROX down 6.55%, OSK down 5.03% and RGEN down 4.92%

There were 125 new 52 week highs and 52 new 52 week lows on NYSE with 99 new highs and 138 new lows on NASDAQ.


The 2 year Treasury note yield is 0.318% and 10 year is 1.610%. The 10 year yield is up 10.15% over five days, up 20.19% over one month, up 18.62% three months ago, and up 107.45% one year ago.
